There are 49 public and many private polytechnics in the country.  Diploma in Engineering course, examination and result of polytechnic institute is held under the Director of Technical Education Board.  The Directorate of Technical Education was established in 1960 for the development of technical education, and the board formed before it was brought under its control.

After the establishment of Technical Education Department, the work of rapid development and expansion of technical education at Degree, Diploma and Trade level is taken.
